Top Ten Female Drummers: Part 1 (1-5)
What’s the only thing that will get your heart beating faster than a phenomenal drummer with catchy grooves and amazing chops? A phenomenal FEMALE drummer with catchy grooves and amazing chops. In all seriousness, some of the best drummers in the world are females, and many of them have had a huge impact on the music industry. Here is Flight Drummers ‘Top Ten Female Drummers”. (In no specific order because they are all great!)
Cindy Blackman Santana
Cindy Blackman was born in Ohio (Not to far from Flight Drummers Headquarters). She began her professional career as a street performer in New York. Cindy also had the opportunity to study at Berklee College of Music for a few years. She is probably most well known for her extensive career with Lenny Kravits (Beginning in 1993). Cindy is a powerful, funky and energetic drummer with great dynamic.

Emmanuelle Caplette
This insanely groovy drummer has phenomenal technique. I was surprised when I stumbled upon one of her videos a few months ago; I was blown away by her musicality and tastefulness.
Emmanuel is from Quebec. Her drumming career began when she was 9 on the snare drum. She spends her time playing and performing at drum festivals, workshops/clinics, and touring with many hip-hop and pop artists in Quebec.

Cora Coleman-Dunham
Cora is a renowned drummer known for her incomparable skills on the set. She is powerful, quick, and can play some sick grooves!
Cora also started her career at age 9. One of Cora’s more noticeable feats would be her gig with the one and only Prince, where she performs along side of her husband (Jason Dunham) who is a phenomenal bass player.
She travels the world touring, playing clinics, master classes/workshops, and much more. She has also performed during half time at the super bowl…in the pouring rain!!
And just to add to her greatness, Cora won the Guitar Center Drum Off in 2003.
Cora has phenomenal chops and will give any drummer a run for their money!
Sheila E
Sheila E is arguable one of the most famous of the female drummers. I know people who aren’t even musicians that know who she is! She has quite a resume under her belt, but here are a few highlights.
Sheila was brought up and influenced by her legendary father Pete Escovedo, known as a Latin Jazz artist. She has been nominated several times for Grammy awards and has had appearances on a few TV shows.
Sheila was first discovered at the age of 5 where she played a solo in front of 3,000 people. Between then and now, she has played with artists such as Prince, Ringo Starr, and Tito Puente (among many others!)

Hannah Ford
This young female drumming sensation is one in a million! Hannah was born in Louisville, Kentucky and at a young age, has studied with some of the best drummers in the world. Among that list of drummers is Louie Bellson, Ndugu Chancler, Peter Erskine, Stanton Moore, Johnny Rabb, Ignacio Berroa, and many more.
Directly following high school she accepted a scholarship to Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Take some time to really check these drummers out. Tune into their careers and what they have accomplished. It is such an amazing thing to see female drummers creating music and expressing themselves through the art of drumming.
It isn’t often you see female drummers, but these women prove that they have so much to offer!
